A winter frolic in The Overberg – The Road to Swellendam

I celebrated my 31st birthday mid July and decided to take some quiet time out with close friends and reflect. Get out of the city and enjoy the air that fills a different part of our beautiful country. After a random draw of locations in South Africa and recommendations from twitter – I picked The Overberg. As soon as I whispered Overberg, Skye from Discover Overberg got in touch and helped me put the weekend together. I asked a couple of friends to join me for a Winter Frolic in The Overberg and the four of us spent two nights and two days in Swellendam and its surrounds.

“Yes Frolic! Be cheerful, merry and playful in The Overberg”

Our weekend started on Friday morning with a 06:25am flight on Kulula airlines that we, the boyfie & I missed. So we ended up on a 07:15am British Airways flight to Cape Town. We booked the flights using Discovery Vitality and got a 20% discount, since a discussion with Wisaal a couple of months ago I’m all about utilizing Vitality. Yes we also used Vitality discount perk at EuropCar on our silver VW Polo rental, oh the places that Polo would go.

The Road to Swellendam

I know Cape Town, the city really well but I hadn’t ever been up to Swellendam and was not prepared for what the 2.5 hour drive had in store us. The beauty of the luminescent canola fields some in the distance and some canola farms flanking the N2. A sense of serenity rushes over you when you look at the glowing yellow against the blues and greys of the overcast sky, and the green flora. It is one of the most pleasurable two hour drives I have been on. Take a ride with me on the canola flanked N2 to Swellendam.

This was a beautiful beginning of what would be a surprising weekend! Look out for Part 2 and Part 3 later this week and next.
